Women’s experiences of decision-making and attitudes in relation to induction of labour: A survey study

Rates of induction labour have been increasing globally to up one in three pregnancies many high-income countries. Although guidelines around induction, and strength the underlying evidence, vary considerably by indication, shared decision-making is increasingly recognised as key. The aim this study was identify women’s mode birth preferences experiences for labour. An antenatal survey women booked an at eight Sydney hospitals conducted. A bespoke questionnaire created assessing demographics, indication pregnancy model care, initial preferences, their experience process. Of 189 respondents (58% nulliparous), major reported reasons included prolonged (38%), diabetes (25%), suspected fetal growth restriction (8%). Most (72%) had hoped spontaneously. Major findings 19% not feeling like they a choice about labour, 26% adequately informed (or uncertain if informed), 17% being given alternatives, 30% receiving any written information on Qualitative responses highlight desire be more actively involved decision-making. substantial minority did feel or prepared, indicated were alternatives induction. Suggested improvements include face-to-face discussions supplemented with information, interventions, such introduction decision aids training, implemented evaluated.
